Fortified milk is widely used around the world to help people deliver essential and necessary nutrients to the body.
According to the Public Relations Department of Iran Dairy Industries Company (Pegah), consuming fortified milk with beneficial nutrients can have various advantages for people’s body health compared to regular unfortified milk.
How is fortified milk produced?
Fortified milk is the same cow’s milk that has additional vitamins and minerals.
How and whether milk should be fortified depends on where you live and what foods may be present in the typical diet of your place of residence.
In terms of consumption, fortified milk is used for the same purposes as regular milk, such as drinking or using in cooking.
To fortify milk, vitamin A palmitate and vitamin D3 are usually added to it. These are the most active and absorbable forms of these vitamins. Since these vitamins are heat-resistant, these very useful and important nutrients can be added to milk before pasteurization and other processes in which milk is heated. These processes are heat operations that kill harmful bacteria and increase the shelf life of milk.
Milk consumption also increases bone health due to its calcium and phosphorus content, which are the two main minerals that form and build bones in the body. In addition, the vitamin D present in fortified milk increases calcium absorption in the body.
In addition, approximately 30% of the calories in milk come from protein, which your body uses to build healthy muscles and create compounds that help direct and regulate some basic functions in the body.
Benefits of Fortified Milk
Compared to unfortified milk, fortified milk has many properties and benefits for your body’s health.
Fortified milk compensates for nutritional deficiencies that exist in your diet.
The process of fortifying milk (adding nutrients not present in milk) and enriching milk (restoring nutrients lost during various operations) was first created to prevent people from contracting diseases related to deficiencies of important nutrients such as rickets (weakening of bones due to vitamin D deficiency).
In addition, fortifying milk is a useful method to correct other nutritional deficiencies that may not be very serious but can still be harmful to your health.
For example, most people around the world receive enough vitamin D to prevent rickets, but may not receive enough to prevent other negative side effects of vitamin D deficiency, such as reduced immune system strength. The results of a study conducted in this field showed that countries that use a lot of fortified milk have more people with high vitamin D intake and also have appropriately high levels of vitamin D in their blood compared to countries that use less fortified milk.
Improves Bone Health
Fortified milk can also greatly help improve bone health. Consuming milk and dairy foods, which are usually fortified, can greatly improve and increase the mineral density in bones or actually create stronger and healthier bones in your body.
Milk is naturally rich in calcium and phosphorus, and bones are largely made of these two beneficial nutrients.
Therefore, even unfortified milk may greatly improve bone health in your body by providing these basic materials needed to create and strengthen your bones.
However, especially fortified milk with vitamin D is excellent for bone health because this nutrient helps your body absorb more calcium.
Consuming an adequate amount of calcium is essential to prevent osteoporosis, a disease that can somewhat cause weakening of the body’s bones. Consuming fortified milk is a low-cost way to get enough calcium and strengthen the amount of calcium absorption in your body, which is easily accessible to everyone.
